About the Author
Jeanne Bryner is the author of several collections of poetry, one book of short stories, and a play. Her poetry collection Smoke received an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award, and No Matter How Many Windows won the Working Class Studies Association Tillie Olsen Award. Bryner has received writing fellowships from Bucknell University, the Ohio Arts Council, and the Vermont Studio Center. Cortney Davis is the author of five poetry collections, most recently Taking Care of Time, winner of the Wheel- barrow Poetry Prize. Her nonfiction publications include The Heart’s Truth: Essays on the Art of Nursing and When the Nurse Becomes a Patient: A Story in Words and Images (Kent State University Press, 2009 and 2015). With Judy Schaefer, she is coeditor of the award-winning Between the Heartbeats and Intensive Care. Davis’s honors include an NEA Poetry Fellowship and four Book of the Year awards from the American Journal of Nursing.

Jeanne Bryner and Cortney Davis did a wonderful job editing this fascinating collection of stories about nursing school from perspectives of nursing students themselves. Some of the virtues highlighted in the stories include compassion, sensitivity, wisdom, and pride. But also present were humor and fear. Some of my favorite articles include Dr. Barbara Broome’s “I Am Not a Superwoman,†an inspirational story of overcoming poverty and racism to becoming a dean of a major university school of nursing; M. Ben McInykovich’s “My Second Go-Around†capturing some of the shenanigans of nursing students; Paula Sergi’s “The Structure of Nursing School in an Otherwise Chaotic Life†that shows how the discipline and work load of nursing school keeps students from getting derailed by temptations of life; Heather Foster’s “Marriage as Sterile Technique†that shows how even the tiniest mistake can kill a patient – and thus accounting for the “fear†always present in clinical practice; and Lady Amaka Offodile’s “From a Far Place†showing that nursing is truly transcultural, multidimensional, and universal. The most hilarious story is that of Virginia Ruth’s “Mr. Magoo of Nursing School†when the student went to a police station to ask for some crack cocaine to show students in a class she was teaching on the dangers of mind-altering drugs. Two other stories made a big impression on me also: Amanda Anderson’s “Learning to Care†shows that we can learn about human beings not only in hospitals, but in places like lively coffee shops; and Roseanne Trost’s “Lesson Learned†that reminds nurses that we need to treat patients’ families as important in our care. Finally, I was very intrigued with the idea of using poetry to highlight the nursing experience. I had not considered that before. The only negative thing I would say about the book is that the print was a little too small for comfortable reading. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone interested in nursing.
The book provides a look backward at the nursing school stories we all treasure, especially when classmates gather for reunions, but most of all it provides an insight into the nature of the gifts and wisdom the nurse brings to the work of healing.
What a wonderful book! It's a collection of stories and poems by nurses recalling their early days of training. One of its terrific aspects is that the training described goes back in some cases to fifty or more years ago, another cultural era. The book is beautifully laid out, with photographs of the authors in their prior identities as student nurses. The writing is terrific. The nurses are a diverse group in terms of race and gender. The pieces are funny, sad, touching, heartbreaking. This is a lovely book, not just for nurses or nurses in training, but for anyone interested in health care, in the culture of medicine and in the recent history of our nation.
