This survey of African photographers accompanies an exhibit of the same name at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The images date from the struggles for independence to the present postcolonial period. Largely concerned with Western and African perceptions of Africa and the emergence of a modern (and more Westernized) self-image, the footnoted essays do not attempt a full history of African photography but discuss such subjects as photographic ethnography, reality and representation, propaganda and truth, and the effects of technological advances on the creation of visual imagery of a continent.
