Jeffrey Melnick has been thinking about the Manson Family since first encountering the book and mini-series Helter Skelter in the 1970s. Melnick is a professor at University of Massachusetts Boston and the author of 9/11 Culture: America Under Construction (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), Black-Jewish Relations on Trial (University Press of Mississippi, 2000), and A Right to Sing the Blues (Harvard University Press, 1999). He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

At first I didn't like it,I was gonna give a 1 star review.it really has very little about the crimes.but after a while I grew more and more interested.It really covers the entire helter-skelter era and has tons of info.The author,however,I could not stand.He took swipes at both Ed Sanders and Vince Bugliosi's (much better) books throughout this book.It really cheapened it for me.
I am sure there is a benefit to this book, but I could not identify it. If you are someone who is interested in the Manson story, other books would be a better option. This maybe a good read for a sociology major, but all others should avoid it.
In my opinion, it seemed that the author was striving for perfection but missed the mark. Every chapter seemed to drag on and it tried to outdo the Vincent Bugliosi bestseller "Helter Skelter, which I felt was a lot better novel and made the Manson case more understandable. Pop culture, aside, this touched on movies, music, etc. that were somehow inspired by Charlie himself. Although, this kindle edition did have some interesting stories. So, I can't say this was all bad. Yet, I will stick with other books based on this subject. matter in the future
I am fascinated with anything having to do with the Manson murders. Even though I knew this was a sociological study of the Manson murders and not a biography or crime book, I am disappointed at how dry and repetitious it is. I guess I should have guessed this when I saw that the introduction was a tedious 21 pages long. I am skimming through the book and will donate it to the library when done. That is a fate I reserve for books I will never want to re-read or refer to again.
Creepy Crawling: Charles Manson and the Many Lives of America's Most Infamous Family by Jeffrey Melnick is a highly recommended scholarly examination of the after effects of the Manson Family's actions and the lasting impact on culture today."'Creepy crawling' was the Manson Family's practice of secretly entering someone's home and, without harming anyone, leaving only a trace of evidence that they had been there, some reminder that the sanctity of the private home had been breached."August 9 and 10, 2019, will mark fifty years since the Manson Family murders. The sixties counterculture, Manson, and the Tate-LaBianca murders still pervaded pop culture today and can be found in art, music, books, films, etc. Melnick explores why Manson and the girls captured the social, political, and cultural events of the past fifty years and still influences many cultural expressions today. It began with a complicated social revolution started in the sixties and marked the end of the decade with murder. Melnick is not concerned with recounting the horrific crimes. In this work he is more concerned with examining the ongoing presence of Manson and the Family in our current culture.Melnick also takes some exception to the "cultural script" as an explanation for the actions of the Manson Family as explained by prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi in his 1974 book Helter Skelter, along with others who wrote about Manson and the girls, like Joan Didion and Todd Gitlin. He feels that Manson became a weapon that was used to tamp down the growth of the sixties counterculture and portray it as a completely negative.The Manson family wasn't the only communal community bonding together as their own kind of family. The counterculture and freak culture was rising and had a firm foothold in California in both San Fransisco and Los Angeles. It is a complicated amalgamation of a myriad of cultural components that all resulted in the sixties counterculture, where not all the participants were psychotic murderers. Many were runaways, believe in free love, experimented with drugs, expressed themselves musically, and wanted to create their own kind of family.Certainly Manson dominated his followers and required that they submit to his authority. For many of his followers, escaping from bad homes, Manson's "family" provided some measure of acceptance, but with a weird twist of submission and sexual availability. It has always been disconcerting for me that Manson basically established a patriarchy, lived off the efforts of the women, and expected them to serve and service him.First it should be noted again that is not a sensationalized true crime account of the murders. This is a well-documented academic examination of the cultural influences of Manson and his family. My review copy contained a plethora of endnotes and a list of works consulted, including print and online, and video documentaries, and websites, and those with which he personally communicated. I almost did not get this book because of the negative reviews. I suggest people ignore them. This book takes a wide-ranging look at the impact that Charles Manson, his family, the Tate-LaBianca murders and the trial itself has had on popular culture, including television, movies, music and literature. The book asks tough questions about why we, as a society, are so fascinated with certain murders. The book is scholarly and comprehensive in scope but the author's writing style is effective and accessible (I only had to look up one word -- Mixolydian). So much interesting stuff to discuss -- I never knew that there were rumors Heart's song "He's A Magic Man" was about Manson, (the band denies it). One negative review says the author knocks Ed Sanders' book The Family and Vincent Bugliosi's book Helter Skelter. He does not do so; in fact, he lauds both of them, although the book and some of the people interviewed take issue with (okay, maybe the word "ridicule" is more accurate) Bugliosi's Helter Skelter theory for the murders. The bibliography and list of sources are invaluable. In closing, I will say that although I am an avid reader, I often find myself reading books, liking them, but wondering why they are so long. I wish this book had been another 100 pages.
I am only 1/4 of the way through this book and it is incredibly tiring. It appears the author did exhaustive research but goes off on other so called cults which I have never heard of and little on Manson and his followers. Would I recommend this book? Nope.
